There are a lot of websites with information about essential oils and cats. Unfortunately there is a a lot of contradictory information. So how do you know what is right?

Here is what we definitely know – cats lack the ability to process certain compounds the way that other mammals do. This means that something safe for you – or your dog – could still harm your cat.

We also know that quantity matters. A little bit of something might be beneficial while a lot of the same substance can be poisonous. The problem is that when it comes to cats and essential oils there just isn’t enough information.

The simple answer is to never use any undiluted essential oils on your cat. Don’t rub it on them. Don’t add it to their food.

The big question for many is about diffusers. Will adding a few drops of essential oil to a diffuser hurt your cat? Probably not but let’s start with some simple guidelines:

1. NEVER use Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Birch, Wintergreen or Tea Tree essential oils. Don’t even use dilutions. Just don’t. It is just too risky to take chances with.

2. IMPORTANT – Only use food quality essential oils in your diffusers. If it isn’t safe to eat, you don’t want you or your pet breathing it in.

3. Never use a diffuser in a closed room.

4. Never place diffuser where your cat can sit or lay next to it.

5. Do not run your diffuser 24/7.

6. Make sure any room with a diffuser has fresh air flow.

7. If your pets show any signs of distress (dizziness, vomiting, drooling, etc) immediately seek advice from a qualified veterinarian.

Most of the warnings about essential oils and cats are based on either very old and very flawed research or anecdotes. As a pet owner, you are responsible for keeping your pet safe. It is better to err on the side of caution but only you can decide where that line is.
